If you have decided to apply to an MBA program, you have most likely worked hard on your academic career. You have put a lot of time and effort into getting a high score on the GMAT and in writing all your personal essays. You need to put that same level of dedication into your MBA interview as well.
Academics and work experience are only part of the process of being admitted into an MBA program. They are obviously very important and are what will get you in the door for an interview. But that interview is just as important. These programs are interested in your interpersonal skills as well.
Your interview gives the school the opportunity to get a better feel for who you are personally. They are looking for you communication skills as well as your values and if you can stand up under pressure. Basically, the interview is a chance for the school to assess your leadership potential, not only if you can make it through the program academically.
It is always best to go to the school itself to be interviewed instead of seeing a representative locally. You will then also have the chance to see the school and evaluate whether it is a good fit for you. It also gives you the opportunity to meet some of the faculty and have more than one interview.
Dress is important and a conservative suit is the norm. This is especially true if interviewing at an Ivy League school or one that is in the top ten. Make sure your clothes and you are clean and neat. You should not wear much jewelry. Should you have tattoos, be sure they are not visible.
The interview will ask questions on many different subjects including why you are applying to the school, your life growing up, your career, your education, and current news. It is especially important that you are properly prepared to explain your motivation for going to business school and that you are interviewing at in particular.
The interviewer is not just interested in your answers but how you answer the questions. Your tone should show confidence but not cockiness. You should remain rational and calm on all subjects. You want to show that you are an emotionally balanced individual.
