Minister’s Collection

One of our primary activities is the Minister’s Collection, which is a showcase and celebration of Saskatchewan student art that is selected for display in the Cumberland Gallery at the Legislature in Regina. Celebration and recognition of the students’ work is held each year and the students are invited to take part in a tour of the gallery and a ceremony in their honour. This exciting day is highlighted by the presentation of certificates from the SSEA and the Minister of Education. In partnership with the University of Regina and MacKenzie Art Gallery we provide students an opportunity to take part in a fine art activity information session for family and friends.

Nature of Art Retreat

The SSEA has held 3 annual Nature of Art Retreats at the Kenderdine Campus, University of Saskatchewan at Emma Lake. These retreats have provided art educators with the opportunity to create artwork while at the same time learning new ideas and techniques to take back to their students. In 2008 we also invited artists of any level to participate and had 3 “new’ artists join us at the retreat. In 2010 we will be holding a retreat in southern Saskatchewan so that we can increase accessibility for people in that area.

New Teacher/Mentor program

We provide new teachers, or teachers new to art education, with a link to teachers who can provide expert advice and guidance by connecting them with an art education expert.

Resource Centre

We have many books, journals, audio and video resources for artists and art educators to borrow from our library. This is especially helpful for teachers in rural and remote areas.

ArtsConnect Conference

We have partnered with Saskatchewan Drama Association and the Saskatchewan Teachers of English Language Arts to offer a joint conference for art educators throughout Saskatchewan. This is usually an annual conference held in November of each year.

Art Educators Showcase

In 2008 we held our inaugural Art Showcase for Art Educators. This will become an annual event and we plan to expand it to have at least one art show in a rural area in 2010.

Advocacy

The SSEA actively advocates for quality visual art education, especially in the school system for example, meeting with the representatives from the Department of Education and University representatives.
